How the AusTrails Map Works

The AusTrails map is an interactive map of every road trip published on this site. It sits on one page, and it’s free to browse.

What you get for free

Open the map and you’ll see clusters of numbered icons scattered across Australia. Each cluster is a group of nearby trips. Zoom in and the cluster splits apart into individual routes, shown as coloured lines tracing the actual path taken.

Select any icon to see the route it belongs to. From there you can jump straight into the trip story: the photos, the day-by-day write-up, and what the route is actually like to drive or tow a caravan along.

This part of the map, the overview, the trip stories, the photography, is open to everyone. No login, no payment.

What Road Trips membership adds

Some routes also have a detailed navigation map: a turn-by-turn Google Map built from the actual GPS track, with waypoints marked along the way, camp spots, lookouts, fuel stops, the lot. Select “get directions” on one of these and it opens ready to guide you, stage by stage.

These detailed route maps are part of Road Trips membership. It’s a one-time payment of $19, and it’s lifetime access, not a subscription. Pay once, and every detailed route map on the site is unlocked for good, including new ones added later.

How to join

1. Find a trip with a locked detailed map (look for the Road Trips membership prompt on the route page).
2. Select the join/unlock option and complete checkout.
3. Once payment goes through, every detailed route map on the site opens up under your account.
