Sofala to Binnaway Pumphouse Reserve (318km, 3.54hrs)
With another early rise, we did a quick tour of the town(Sofala) before heading up the mountain to Hills End.
Sofala is one of the oldest surviving gold rush towns in Australia. The town is located in a picturesque setting, nestled in the rugged terrain of the Turon River Valley. The surrounding countryside is characterized by rolling hills, forests, and the serene river, making it a great place for outdoor activities like hiking and camping, photography and en plein air.
Sofala has a thriving artistic community, with many local artists finding inspiration in the town’s history and natural beauty. You can find various art galleries and studios showcasing the work of these talented individuals.
Sofala has also been used as a filming location for several Australian movies and television shows. Its charming, historic ambiance and scenic surroundings make it a popular choice for filmmakers.
1. SOFALA to HILL END 36.4km, 33min
Now, this is a real historical town in mothballs. Most buildings are kept in excellent condition.
Hill End has been a source of inspiration for various artists. The famous Australian artist Brett Whiteley lived and worked in Hill End, and the town’s landscape and historic buildings have been featured in numerous paintings and artworks.
The town hosts various events throughout the year, including the “Hill End Festival,” which celebrates the town’s heritage and artistic community.
Dark Sky Park: In recognition of its minimal light pollution, Hill End and the surrounding region have been designated as a Dark Sky Park, making it an excellent spot for stargazing and astrophotography.
Would so have loved to spend a little more time here. But we still managed to find some great shots, including some of our old family Northy’s General Store.
2. HILL END to BINNAWAY PUMPHOUSE RESERVE 224km, 2.40 hrs – 4 Castlereagh Ave (via Gulgong & Coolah)
Not too adventurous at our next night spot, capturing the classic windmill sunset. Binnaway Pumphouse Reserve was a brilliant Free Camp beside the Castlereagh Rivervia
